Drug kingpin Kanjipani further remanded

The Colombo Magistrate yesterday further remanded the underworld drug leader Mohamed Najim Mohamed Imran alias Kanjipani Imran who has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment, until 20 September on charges of threatening to two Police officers with death while he was overseas.

Presenting submissions before the court, the Police requested the court to remand the suspect under the Prevention of Terrorism Act without granting bail until the case is concluded.

Accordingly, the Magistrate ordered the Police to forward Kanjipani Imran’s mobile phone to the Government Analyst for voice analysis of the complainant Inspector and the suspect Kanjipani Imran and submit a report to the court.

The complaint states that Kanjipani Imran telephoned and threatened the Police officers with death from overseas when his accomplice Khemadasan Thushanthan was arrested with heroin.

Kanjipani Imran was sentenced last month to six years rigorous imprisonment for possessing and smuggling 5.3 kg of cannabis after he pleaded guilty to the charges.
