Daily PCR tests to be increased to 15,000

The number of PCR tests performed on a daily basis in the country will be increased to a minimum of 15,000 in response to the rise in COVID-19 patients detected in the island.

Following a meeting with experts yesterday, the Health Ministry issued several measures that will be taken in the country in order to prevent further spread of the virus.

According to a statement issued by the Health Ministry, special quarantine laws will be prepared for overseas arrivals. Quarantine regulations will be implemented strictly and persons who fail to comply with them will face charges.

Bed capacity in intensive care units will be increased and high flow oxygen supply for COVID-19 patients will be supplied as needed. More treatment centres will also be introduced on a district and provincial level and patients will be directed to treatment centres depending on their condition.

More personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided to healthcare professionals and data collection mechanisms will be strengthened.

In addition to COVID-19 prevention measures, the Health Ministry has also decided to strengthen outpatient and inpatient treatment and surgery facilities for other diseases.
