Customs nab Ecstasy package at Central Mail Exchange

Customs Department yesterday foiled an attempt to smuggle 18,000 Methamphetamine pills from Belgium to five addresses in Sri Lanka at the CME

The Customs Department yesterday confiscated 18,000 Methamphetamine (also known as Ecstasy) pills, weighing nine kilograms in several parcels that were en-route to five local addresses from Belgium. 

The parcels were intercepted at the Central Mail Exchange (CME).

The Customs claim that the haul estimated to have a street value of Rs. 13.5 Billion, the largest single detection of the narcotic by any law enforcement agency in the country up to date. 

The pills had been concealed among chocolates and other food items in nine parcels that had been posted from Belgium to five addresses in Sri Lanka. The Customs also detected 16 kg of the narcotic plant ‘Kath’ (origin – Somalia) in eight packages at the CME.  Further investigations into the haul of ‘party drugs’ is being conducted by the Counter Narcotics Unit of the Customs Department, a Senior Customs officer said.
