China donates Rs. 33 m worth security equipment

Three Portable X-ray Machines and five Walk-through Metal Detectors with total value about Rs. 33 million were handed over yesterday by Ambassador Cheng Xueyuan on behalf of the Chinese Government to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya on behalf of the Sri Lankan Parliament. 

The urgently-needed security equipment provided by China will better secure the safety of the MPs from all political parties, as well as all the Parliament staffs, journalists and visitors.

On 17 June, the first batch of 20 senior Sri Lankan Tri-Forces and Police officers have returned to Colombo after a two-week training program in China. On 9 May, 10 Police jeeps granted by the Chinese side were handed over to Sri Lankan Police to reinforce its patrol and safeguard capacity.

All assistance mark only first steps of China’s firm support. During President Maithripala Sirisena’s recent visit to China, President Xi Jinping has extended great and strong support from China to Sri Lanka with an emergency fund of Rs. 2.6 billion for the latter’s security personnel and technical training, as well as security equipment and materials. Currently, the Chinese Government is studying implementing the requests raised by the Sri Lankan Government case by case according to the priority.

The Embassy said after the brutal terrorist attacks on 21 April in Sri Lanka, the Chinese Government and the Chinese people have been standing together with Sri Lankan side, and firmly supporting Sri Lanka safeguarding its national security and stability. 

China always regards Sri Lanka as a good neighbour, a good partner, a good friend and a good brother. All assistance from China to Sri Lanka, with no strings attached, represents the good will of the Chinese people.
