CaFFE urges candidates in the north to refrain from using LTTE songs for election propaganda

The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) says candidates of several political parties contesting for the local government elections in the northern districts of Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu are using separatist songs popularised by the LTTE terrorist group for election propaganda.

CaFFE Executive Director Keerthi Tennakoon, addressing a meeting of the candidates contesting the elections in the north, on Saturday in Jaffna said they had observed that some candidates are using LTTE songs in their election campaigns.

“We observed that several candidates for Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu local government institutions are using not only separatist songs but also the songs popularised by the LTTE for their election campaigns. The use of LTTE songs at election campaigns is not only a violation of election law, it is also a violation of the law of the country,” Tennakoon said.

“We kindly request all political party candidates and independent candidates here to respect the election laws and the law of the country when engaging in election campaigns,” the CaFFE Executive Director urged.

He pointed out that in some parts of the Northern Province, local government elections are being held after 67 years and stressed that obeying the election laws as well the law of the country was the responsibility of the candidates not only in the Northern Province but also those in the entire country.
