COVID-19 fatalities rise to 551 with five more deaths

Health authorities yesterday confirmed five more COVID-19 deaths, bring the country’s COVID-19 death toll to 551.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Government Information, a 68-year-old individual from Kadawatha died while receiving treatment at the Minuwangoda Base Hospital yesterday. The cause of death was cited as trauma of blood poisoning, heart disease, high blood pressure and asthma.

The same day, an individual from Bandaragama died of a liver infection and COVID-19 at the Homagama Base Hospital, where he was transferred from the Colombo South Teaching Hospital. The individual was 51 years old.

A 78-year-old from Nugathalawa died of acute COVID pneumonia at the Teldeniya Base Hospital yesterday. He was transferred from the Welimada Base Hospital.

On Sunday, a 78-year-old from Weuda died at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital. The cause of death was cited as COVID-19, heart failure, acute diabetes, and kidney disease.

On 16 March, an 80-year-old individual from Galle died of acute pneumonia and COVID-19 while receiving treatment at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.
