COVID-19 fatalities rise to 1,089 with 38 more deaths

The Department of Government Information (DGI) yesterday issued a statement on the 38 deaths that occurred between 7 May and 20 May that were confirmed as COVID-19-related by health authorities on Thursday.

The main causes of death were complications associated with COVID pneumonia and chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

The majority of the individuals were above the age of 61 years. According to the DGI, two persons between 31 and 40 years, one person between 41 and 50 years, one person between 51 and 60 years, 10 persons between 61 and 70 years, and 24 persons over the age of 70 are among the deaths confirmed on Thursday.

The individuals were residents of Borella, Katunayake, Kochchikade, Negombo, Mathugama, Polgahawela, Belihuloya, Kurunegala, Yatiyantota, Thalathuoya, Udukinda, Lunugala, Balangoda, Bandurugoda, Bandarakoswatte, Padeniya, Thorayaya, Galgamuwa, Siyambalape, Ethenawatte, Nawalapitiya, Nebada, Kekunugolla, Nikaweratiya, Warakapola, Ampitiya, Marassana, Rajawella, Udispattuwa, and Habaraduwa. A total of 1,089 persons have died of COVID-19 to date.
