COVID-19 death toll rises to 264

Eight COVID-19-related deaths were confirmed yesterday by health authorities, raising the country’s COVID-19 death toll to 264.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Government Information, three of the eight deaths occurred yesterday.

A resident of Colombo 8 tested positive for COVID-19 while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo and was transferred to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID). The individual died of trauma of blood poisoning and multi-organ dysfunction with COVID pneumonia yesterday. He was 83-years-old.

A 75-year-old resident of Ududumbara yesterday died of an acute respiratory tract infection, COVID pneumonia and heart disease while receiving treatment at the Colombo East Base Hospital. He was transferred to the hospital after testing positive for COVID-19 at the Avissawella District General Hospital.

A 66-year-old individual from Polonnaruwa also passed away yesterday. He tested positive for COVID-19 at the Welikanda Base Hospital and was transferred to the NIID, where he died of acute liver infection, blood poisoning and COVID-19.

On 16 January, an individual from Kegalle died while receiving treatment at the Homagama Base Hospital. The 87-year-old died of bronchitis exacerbated by COVID-19 and heart disease.

The same day, a 72-year-old resident of Dehiwala died of COVID pneumonia and heart disease. He died at the Homagama Base Hospital, where he was transferred after testing positive for COVID-19 at a private hospital in Colombo.

Health authorities also confirm that a 27-year-old resident of Udupussellawa died of COVID-19 and lung infection on 15 January while receiving treatment at the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital, where he was transferred from the Udupussellawa Base Hospital.

On 14 January, an individual from Borella died of COVID pneumonia and high blood pressure. He was transferred to the Colombo East Base Hospital from a private hospital in Colombo after testing positive for COVID-19. The individual was 75-years-old.

The final death confirmed by health authorities occurred on 13 January. A 63-year-old individual from Kolonnawa died while receiving treatment at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka. The cause of death is COVID pneumonia.
