CID Director lodges complaint against lawyer

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Director Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shani Abeysekera yesterday lodged a complaint with the Police alleging he was threatened by Attorney-at-Law Manoj Gamage.

Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said the CID Director had lodged the complaint at the Fort Police Station stating Gamage had threatened him during a press conference on Saturday. “The lawyer holding a press conference on the controversial case against Dr. Mohamed Shafi of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, has allegedly threatened SSP Abeysekera,” he said

SP Gunasekera said that SSP Abeysekera was the leading investigating officer in the case against Dr. Shafi and according to the Victims and Witness Protection Act he could not be threatened. The CID in their investigations found no evidence of Dr. Shafi being responsible for allegedly sterilising women during his tenure at the hospital. The doctor was released on bail last Thursday.
