The Army yesterday began deploying Military Police (MP) to assist City Traffic Police during peak hours.

MPs will be deployed at congested entry and exit points in the greater Colombo area and will assist in easing traffic congestion while closely liaising with the Police’s Colombo City Traffic Division.

The MPs will be deployed during peak hours between 6.00 a.m. and 10.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. and 7.00 p.m throughout the week, Military Spokesman Brig. Chandana Wickramasinghe told the Daily FT.

According to the Army, the project was conceptualised by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and is expected to minimise the time spent on the road by citizens and help increase national productivity.

The Army MPs will deploy cars and motorbikes to meet the task and will also monitor congestion, coordinate communication and maintain surveillance during peak hours, the Army said.
