7 more COVID-19 deaths; toll rises to 297

The country’s COVID-19 death toll rose to 297 with health authorities confirming seven COVID-19 deaths, of which two deaths occurred yesterday.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Government Information, a 73-year-old individual from Nittambuwa passed away at his residence yesterday. The cause of death is cited as high blood pressure, diabetes and a heart attack associated with COVID-19.

A 76-year-old individual from Ratnapura yesterday passed away while receiving treatment at the Ratnapura Teaching Hospital. The cause of death is cited as exacerbated heart disease, blood poisoning, and COVID-pneumonia.

The previous day, a 61-year-old individual from Colombo 13 died while receiving treatment at the Colombo East Base Hospital, where he was admitted after testing positive for COVID-19 at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka. The individual died of acute COVID-pneumonia with heart dysfunction.On 26 January, an 86-year-old individual from Colombo 6 died while being admitted to the Ittapana District Hospital. The cause of death is cited as diabetes that exacerbated with COVID-19 and high blood pressure.

Health authorities also confirmed that a 67-year-old individual from Colombo 6 died on 24 January at a private sector hospital in Colombo. She died of COVID-pneumonia and asthma.

On 21 January, a 62-year-old individual from Enderamulla died while being admitted to the National Hospital of Sri Lanka. He died of COVID-pneumonia and complications of kidney disease. The final death confirmed by health authorities was that of a 61-year-old inmate of the Colombo Prison. He tested positive for COVID-19 while receiving treatment at the prison hospital and was transferred to the National Hospital of Sri Lanka. However, he died of COVID-pneumonia, a heart attack and exacerbated diabetes on 16 January.
