A total of 228 persons tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday, bringing the total number of patients detected in the island to 94,564.
The patients detected yesterday include 180 associates of the Peliyagoda cluster and three persons from the Prisons cluster. The Department of Government Information states that 89,524 patients have been detected from the Divulapitiya, Peliyagoda and Prisons cluster.
The country’s total patient count also includes 2,845 Sri Lankan returnees from abroad, 950 Navy personnel and their contacts, 651 persons linked to the Kandakadu cluster, and 236 foreigners.
The district distribution of COVID-19 patients shows 30,116 persons from Colombo, 18,553 persons from Gampaha, 6,742 persons from Kalutara, 4,224 persons from Kandy, and 2,981 persons from Ratnapura.
According to the Epidemiology Unit, 2,699 persons are currently under medical care. The active cases include 283 persons at the Kopai Treatment Centre, 114 persons at the Embilipitiya Treatment Centre, and 98 persons at the Krishnapuram Treatment Centre. Hospitals also have 302 persons suspected of having COVID-19 under observation.
The Epidemiology Unit adds that 228 persons were discharged from treatment centres yesterday. This includes 48 persons from the Kopai Treatment Centre, 16 persons from the Bingiriya Treatment Centre, and 15 persons from the Krishnapuram Treatment Centre. With this, the country’s COVID-19 recoveries have risen to 91,272.
On Thursday, 343 persons tested positive for COVID-19, of which 128 were from Jaffna, 68 were from Colombo, and 39 were from Gampaha.
Commenting on the high number of COVID-19 patients detected from Jaffna, Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said they were contacts of previously identified patients.
“Contacts of the patient cluster we previously identified in Jaffna were directed for quarantine and this number was identified from the PCR test performed at the end of the quarantine period,” he said, adding that more positive results were expected yesterday as well.
“There is no threat to society because these patients are under quarantine, so even if the number of patients is high at present, it has been managed very well,” Dr. Samaraweera went on to say.
