‘Navy Sampath’ arrested for abduction and disappearance of 11 youths

A suspect named Chandana Hettiarachchi was arrested on Monday by the Criminal Investigation Division for the kidnapping and disappearance of 11 youths in 2008 and 2009.

According to Police media spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara, the suspect, who goes by the alias ‘Navy Sampath’, had been arrested on Lotus Road in the Fort area. 

The suspect has allegedly kidnapped 11 youths for extortion but no bodies have been found thus far. 

“The CID agents had recognised an individual who looked like the suspect and arrested him on suspicion,” SP Gunasekara said, adding that the suspect had attempted to completely change his appearance by letting his hair and beard grow. 

The suspect was arrested with false identification bearing the fake name Polwatte Gallage Ashoka. 

The suspect had been working as a security officer recently at an estate in Dompe.

He was produced before the Fort Magistrate Courts where a Detention Order was given to detain the suspect for 48 hours. 

The Criminal Investigation Division is carrying out further investigations.
