The need for good corporate governance and board room practices have never been so pertinent with increased expectations and responsibilities being placed on directors whilst key stakeholders keenly observe director behaviour and performance as a matter of right.

The Sri Lanka Institute of Directors (SLID), the trailblazer on board governance, certified 29 participants from the 5th and 6th intake who completed all 4 parts of the Board Leadership Director Certification Programme (BLT) at a recently held event at the Galadari Hotel. Of the 29 certificates awarded, 20 SLID ordinary are now eligible to use the post nominal GSLID.

The BLT Programme is an in depth course covering the essentials on Board Stewardship and the attributes required to lead a business whilst enhancing board performance and decision making. The course, based on the IFC Corporate Governance Board Leadership Training Resources toolkit (Toolkit), includes relevant content applicable for Sri Lanka by SLID facilitators, and is accredited by the Securities & Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC). It is delivered by SLID’s facilitators who are renowned business personalities with real-life experience in their respective fields.

SLID Chairman Preethi Jayawardena welcomed the participants and congratulated them on now being equipped to being more effective directors. The Chief Guest for the evening, Ronnie Peiris, commenced his address by posing the question ‘Are the current boards of directors ready to be effective in an era where there is unimaginable disruption?’ By completing this course he was of the view that the participants should be able to fulfil this role but also suggested that they wrestle with this question in their own minds. He shared some thought provoking and challenging ideas and also provided some valuable advice to those who had completed the BLT programme.

Ronnie Peiris’s encouraging words were followed by the awarding of the certificates by him, Chairman Preethi Jayawardena, Immediate Past Chairperson Shiromal Cooray, and Vice Chairman Faizal Salieh.

Keeping in line with SLIDs view that time is of value the formalities were kept to a minimum with more time for fellowship. We wish the new graduates all the best and look forward to seeing them being more effective directors in the future! The next Intake commences on 6 February.
