By Sarah Hannan We have often seen brothers perform in musical ensembles but it is quite magnificent to see twins perform in perfect harmony. Having witnessed a few sets of twins perform at local talent shows I noticed that they always had this urge to out-stage the other. But in the lives of Julian Prins and Jason Prins aka ‘JJ Twins’ there is no such competition be it music or their day-to-day lives. I caught up with the twins on a gloomy Thursday evening at the popular ‘Good Market’ at Diyata Uyana, Battaramulla where they perform weekly. The duo considers music as a gift from God and says that none of their parents were into music. Their journey in music began at the age of 10 where they started composing their songs. Three years later the JJ Twins decided to take guitar lessons from their guitar tutor Mark and both are now attending vocal training sessions as well. Their first-ever public appearance was at Waters Edge at the age of nine covering Robbie Williams ‘Angel’. When asked about their achievements as musicians, the twins stated that they emerged All Island Winners at the Sri Lanka Festival for Performing Arts which was held in August this year. Apart from composing songs in their spare time, the twins enjoy playing basketball, drawing, beat-boxing and acting in stage plays. The most notable play the twins took part in was ‘Oliver Twist’ where they portrayed characters of orphans. In 2012 the JJ Twins recorded and produced two singles ‘Takes My Heart Away’ and ‘You’re My Lover’ in 2012 and this year released a YouTube clip of their song ‘Your Heart is in My Hand’. Apart from those three tracks the twins also sang ‘I Belong to You’ at the Good Market on Thursday. Ending the interview the JJ Twins extended their gratitude saying, “We would like to thank our parents for all their support and specially Anton Fernando for scheduling us to perform at the Prince Leone gig which was held in Nelum Pokuna, Colombo.” JJ Twins fans can look forward for their next release ‘Take it to the Ceiling’ featuring Prince Leone.
