  • With ‘Mahadanamuththa and modern Golayas’
Expographic bookstore, Pelawatte will combine their first year anniversary with the second year anniversary of Power of Play Ltd. and host the first public performance of ‘Mahadanamuththa and modern Golayas’ for year 2013 on Saturday, 23 November from 7 – 8 p.m. at Expographic Bookstore, Pelawatte (455, Pannipitiya Road, Pelawatta). This performance is powered by Trekurious (www.trekurious.com) (Limited seating – available on a first come, first served basis.) ‘Mahadanamuththa and modern Golayas – The Fighting-Goat Star’ is a side-splitting contemporary adaptation of the famous Sri Lankan folk tale about the mis-adventures of the wise fool and his faithful followers. Brought to life through Indonesian rod-puppets, hand puppets and improv-theater, this adaptation includes a democratic Mahadanamuththa who has recruited golayas (disciples) of all ethnicities and genders, with the goal of discovering sustainable solutions for problems afflicting 21st century Sri Lankans. Packed with live music, raucous humour, realistic disagreements and a touch of puppet violence, Mahadanamuththa and his modern golayas demonstrate the need for unity in diversity for communal progress. (Note: Show will be performed primarily in Sinhalese with English translations in between scenes. Colloquial humour will be used and puppets – like humans – will rib each other inappropriately. This is an adult show suitable for children – ideal for families with a sense of humour. ) Established in November 2011, Power of Play Ltd. (PoP) utilises performing arts for communication with a special focus on puppetry. ‘Mahadanamuththa and modern Golayas’ is conceptualised by PoP in collaboration with Giri Harja III – the puppet troupe of maestro puppeteer Dalang Asep Sunandar Sunarya of Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Premiered in 2010 at the Indonesian Embassy of Colombo, the modern Golayas of Mahadanamuththa has delighted diverse Sri Lankan audiences while discussing issues of corporate and public importance. Mahadanamuththa is one of the novel communication solutions PoP offers amongst other innovative products that capitalise performing arts for communication.
