MUFG Bank, the commercial banking entity of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, has awarded scholarships to 17 undergraduates from the University of Colombo.

The scholarships, worth $ 5,100 each, were awarded to students by MUFG Colombo Representative Office Resident Representative Masaru Enomoto, on behalf of the Mitsubishi UFJ Foundation. These scholarships will cover their school fees for one academic year.

The MUFG award recipients, who are in their second, third or fourth year of their full-time undergraduate programs, were selected by the university based on their strong academic track records. They come from a variety of educational streams such as management and finance, medicine, science, law and the arts.

The Mitsubishi UFJ Foundation was established to promote and support talent development and international cross-cultural relations. This is the third year that the foundation has been implementing this scholarship programme in conjunction with the university.

Enomoto said: “MUFG has a longstanding history of serving the communities it operates in. It is our privilege to support the University of Colombo for three consecutive years, and enable deserving recipients to continue to excel in their studies. Through this scholarship, we believe that these promising students can realise their potential and pursue their dreams, contribute to Sri Lanka’s long-term development, and serve as role models for other young talent in the country.”

The scholarship award ceremony was hosted at College house of the University of Colombo. In attendance was Vice Chancellor Professor Chandrika N. Wijeyaratne.

MUFG bank is the largest bank in Japan, and was the first Japanese bank to open a representative office in January 2016.
