Japan confers prestigious decoration upon Upali Stanley Jayasekera

On 21 May, the Government of Japan announced the conferment of ‘The Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays’ upon Upali Stanley Jayasekera, in recognition of his invaluable contribution to the promotion of friendship and mutual understanding between Sri Lanka and Japan.

Upali Stanley Jayasekera, who had retired from public service as Deputy Postmaster General of Postal Services in 1991, was appointed as Honourable Secretary of JICA Alumni Association of Sri Lanka in 1998. Jayasekera was a participant of the Postal Saving Executives Seminar conducted by JICA under the patronage of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications in 1987. Before retiring from the position in 2016, he had taken lead in organising health camps, blood donations campaign and other social activities of JICA Alumni Association.

In 2014, he was appointed as Chairman of the Sasakawa Memorial Sri Lanka-Japan Cultural Centre Trust and took further lead in arranging various events and workshops related to Japan. Through these activities, he had contributed greatly to the promotion of friendship and mutual understanding between Sri Lanka and Japan.

Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Taro Kono sent a congratulatory message on the same date commending Jayasekera’s outstanding contribution while extending his best wishes for continued good health and happiness.
