Access Engineering wins 3 awards at National Occupational Safety and Health Excellence Awards 2018

Access Engineering, the pioneer in civil engineering in Sri Lanka was able to secure three prestigious awards at the National Occupational Safety and Health Excellence Awards 2018 held at BMICH on 22 August.

National Occupational Safety and Health Excellence Awards is organised by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) with a view to recognise and reward industries, service sector organisations and individuals who have undertaken necessary safety precautions at work environment. National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health was established on 28 April 2005 as an affiliated body to the Ministry of Labour and Labour Relations through the enactment of the National Vocational Safety and Health Institution Act No. 38 of 2009.

Safety at workplace is one of the main priorities placed in today’s corporate world. Construction industry is the employer of the 7% of the nation’s 7.8 million workforce (Situational Analysis on Health and Safety in Sri Lanka, WHO, November 2016). Implementation of health and safety standards ensures the achievement of highest possible level of physical, mental and social well-being of the workforce and helps prevent workers deviating from good health to ill health due to exposure to hazards and risks encountered at work. A healthy workforce may contribute significantly towards the economic growth and also an attraction for FDIs.

Organisations were categorised into Large and Medium and Small where an entity with more than 250 employees was categorised as ‘Large’ and less than 250 was categorised as ‘Medium and Small’. National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) award encourages commitment of corporate to better working conditions for all people through increasing awareness of an adherence to proper health and safety measures. 

Access Engineering took the pride in winning following three awards:

1.  Construction Large Sector Category – Winner (Construction of housing projects for government employees Borella)

2.  Construction Sector Small and Medium Category – Winner (Central Expressway Project- Section 2)

3.  Other Sectors – Merit award for Occupational Health and Safety in Transport and Logistics (Central Equipment Division II)
