Women are equally being exposed to the world’s hardships and challenges while still being the strong- root of the household, trying their best to have the best of both worlds. The amount of pressure they go through each day may cause various health issues. Women are selfless by nature, specially a woman who reaches the maturity of a mother. They often tend to care for the family than taking care of herself.

Maybe at times they might give up on their daily jog, gym hours, and doctor’s appointments or even skip a few meals which will ultimately result poor health or even deathly diseases. If women are given the opportunities to enjoy life and to improve on their health then the family as a whole will reap the benefits.

Health is the ultimate profit to every living being without any doubt, within that spectrum, women’s health is a constantly discussed topic with the increasing number of breast cancers and emerging diseases such as genital herpes, arthritis and infertility.

Parallel to World Women’s Day the WHO highlighted that some of the most critical areas for women’s health being cancer, reproductive health, maternal health, HIV, mental health and noncommunicable diseases. Creating awareness and providing necessary medical treatment methods to eradicate the potential threats was mainly highlighted.

Women in Sri Lanka form approximately 57% of a total estimated population of 21 million. Out of the total economically active population of 8.5 million persons, women employee percentage is 33.4%  and the rest is either fully involved in domestic care or going through difficult situations being working mothers or Single mothers who battle each day to keep a balanced life yet often fail to do so thus neglect their own issues mostly being health.

As a country that allocates around 3.5% of its GDP each year for the health sector, Sri Lanka is making an effort to reach some level of standard in the health care sector, especially focusing on women’s health care and creating awareness, attending to the medical needs of women throughout the country essentially to fight breast and womb cancers, tumours, venereal diseases, arthritis, malnutrition, maternal health issues and  give proper guidance to overcome depression and adapt towards a more healthy lifestyle. Both the private and public sectors have been focusing on the women’s health care movement for the last two decades by initiating major projects significantly to address the matter.
