Lanka Hospitals Nursing School produces more nurses

Lanka Hospitals Nursing School (LHNS) recently organised ‘The Capping Ceremony’ of its 2019 batch of nurses. 

Having inaugurated in 2001, LHNS trains around 60 nurses each year and the 2019 batch consisted of 52 nurses. Lanka Hospitals Nursing School is the first nursing school in Sri Lanka to use the newly-developed   NVQ level-6 Higher National Diploma curriculum. 

Being the main supplier of nurses to Lanka Hospital for the past 18 years, the nursing school has a very successful track record with a graduating rate of 100%. With curriculum lectures fully conducted in English and a high standard maintained in the training plus a job assurance at Lanka Hospitals upon completion, the nursing course is one of the best available in Sri Lanka.

The LHNS’s training program in General Nursing prepares students to become general nurses. After successful completion of the general nursing program, they will be qualified to join the Nursing Department of Lanka Hospitals. 

In the first year, students will learn about the main principles of nursing, other introductory subjects as well as receive practical training. In the second and third years more advanced nursing procedures through clinical and practical training are conducted at Lanka Hospitals. 

The Diploma in General Nursing is awarded following the successful completion of the three-year program. The course is conducted following the NVQ level 6 nursing curriculum approved by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC) and National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA). Therefore, at the end of the course students will also be awarded the internationally recognised NVQ level 6 Higher National Diploma nursing qualification by the TVEC. 

The first intake of nursing students consisting 14 heads in 2001 was capped in 2004. In addition to a monthly allowance each student is paid a stipend monthly for the clinical work provided by them for the hospital during their training. All the nursing students are provided with free accommodation and uniforms. Meals and a medical insurance facility are provided at a subsidised price.
