Leading healthcare chain Hemas Hospitals recently reaffirmed its high standard of quality when it had its Integrated Management System (IMS) certified by respected UK body LMS Certification Ltd.

This makes Hemas Hospitals the first Sri Lankan organisation to secure this prestigious certification. Possessing a trusted global reputation, LMS Certification Ltd. is formally linked to the International Accreditation Service (IAS) which certifies management systems dealing with quality, environmental, safety, food, Information Technology and social accountability standards.

The hospital chain’s IMS consists of the ISO 9001: 2015 Quality Management System standard, ISO 14001: 2015 Environment Management System standard and the ISO 45001: 2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System standard.

It was implemented in collaboration with Swiss multinational Ecovis International, one of the world’s top consulting and advisory firms. This was the first time that the company had assisted in initiating a risk-based IMS for an Asian hospital. The process involved structuring an integrated system of quality, safety and environmental sustainability in order to adopt a patient-centric approach, according to ECOVIS India Managing Director Dheeraj Rathi.

“Ensuring quality across all of our processes is the main component of our strategy to bring high-quality healthcare to residents living outside of Colombo’s city limits. To achieve this, we continuously refine our operational efficiency and safety to deliver a service which meets the highest international standards,” said Hemas Hospitals and Laboratories Managing Director and President, Association of Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Dr. Lakith Peiris.

This strategy has seen the group strictly adhere to productivity and efficiency systems such as the LEAN and 5S concepts in order to enhance standards of service and care as well as maintain the quality of its labs. Hemas Hospitals’ determination to align with international healthcare standards also saw it securing Australia Council on Healthcare Standards Internationally (ACHSI) certification, which is considered the gold seal of international accreditation.

First established in 2008 with the launch of its pioneering facility in Wattala, followed by a second facility in Thalawathugoda, Hemas Hospitals is one of the most advanced hospital chains in Sri Lanka. The organisation provides a wide array of surgical and medical specialties and has established an island-wide network of clinical laboratories.
