The Postgraduate Institute of English (PGIE) of the Open University of Sri Lanka is offering an exciting new Postgraduate Diploma in English and Communication.

The program, called the Postgraduate Diploma in the Professional Practice in English (PGDip PPE), takes a unique approach to building English language skills by looking at English not as a subject but as an effective means of communication using a range of authentic situations in real-life working conditions.

This postgraduate diploma was developed with input from key stakeholders in the industry combined with the academic excellence and experience of the PGIE which is renowned for its rigorous academic standards.

The program caters to all the language requirements of professionals including speaking, writing, digitally-mediated communication, soft skills and much more. In addition, the program provides for development in both accurate and fluent English language communication.

The PGIE’s approach is to first build fluency in the students and thereafter improve accuracy. Especially when it comes to speech in Sri Lanka the main problem with English is inhibition – and helping professionals overcome this fear of speaking is a primary objective of this program.

Another aspect that this program takes very seriously is sustained and long-term language enhancement. In many of the courses available the contact hours are insufficient to build language competency. The PGDip PPE has more than 250 contact hours of which much of the time will be spent in practical hands-on activities.

All the assessments in the program draw from realistic workplace scenarios and therefore allow the students to directly relate their learning to their work environment. The overall focus of the program is on doing rather than passive learning.

The faculty for the program are highly-qualified ELT academics as well as experienced personnel from the corporate sector. During the program participants will also get the opportunity to meet and talk to thought leaders and leaders in entrepreneurship who will demonstrate the importance of English and communication in the workplace.

The PGDip PPE is a one-year program with sessions conducted in the evening every Monday and two Saturdays a month at the PGIE’s premises in the Open University of Sri Lanka Central Campus in Nawala Nugegoda.

Applications can be collected from the PGIE or downloaded from the OUSL website. Completed applications should reach the PGIE by 5 March. Call 0112881027, 0112881133 or email [email protected] or [email protected] for further information.
