Western Province Governor M. Azath S. Salley has urged heads of schools in his province to give their suggestions and plans to prepare a master plan to uplift the standard of education in schools. The Governor was addressing the heads of 64 Muslim schools in Gampaha, Kalutara and Colombo districts at his secretariat yesterday.

Addressing the principals, Salley said that considering the performance of the students at public examinations, it has been revealed that the standard of education in the Western Province has come down from one to three. “This has to be restored,” he added.

Provincial directors of education Jayantha Nanayakkara and Wimal Gunaratne were also present at the meeting.

Listening to the problems faced by the school principals, the Governor assured that he will not allow political transfers among teachers in the Western Province.

He said every school should have a watcher to look after the properties of the state and also it should have a cleaner to keep the toilets neat and tidy which would keep the students stay healthy.

The Governor said that he would make arrangements to pay the allowance meant for such janitors since it is important to keep the students healthy by creating a hygienic environment within the school.

He also requested the principal not to store damaged furniture inside classrooms or in conspicuous places and also keep the school environment beautiful for the children to learn their daily lessons.
