The first woman Governor of the Rotary in Sri Lanka and Maldives Gowri Rajan who was conferred the ‘Inspiring Leadership’ award at the Professional Women in Management Awards – 2014 acknowledged that the appointment of K.R. Ravindran as the International President of Rotary International would add value to building brand Sri Lanka and help build the country image globally. Governor Gowri Rajan went on to mention that given that the International President was based at the Rotary Headquarters in Chicago and would be addressing over 100 clubs across the world which will reach over a million Rotarians around the world, brand Sri Lanka would become a top of the mind brand across the Rotary world with the national anthem being featured at every meeting he addresses whilst the national flag being flown at the Rotary Headquarters in Chicago. “Now the task ahead is for Sri Lanka to continuously be featured in global media for positive developments which is the role of the private sector, the 20 million people of Sri Lanka and the policymakers,” said Governor Rajan. “With the positive stories that emanate Sri Lanka will move to the choice set among the top end segment of travellers who are Rotarians, whereby they have the propensity to be the next visitors to our island destination. I hope one day Sri Lanka can host the Global Conference of Rotary in Sri Lanka which attracts the cream of the world professions to one forum.” “With the Rotary theme for this year being ‘Light Up Rotary,’ we will be launching key projects nationally that will help enhance the quality of life in support of the Government initiative of further improving the score on the Human Development Index in which Sri Lanka is already the best in Asia.” Rajan added: “We at Rotary want to make a difference to every Sri Lankan across the country with a private-public-people partnership approach. It is estimated that the Rotary contribution to Sri Lanka exceeds 200 million dollars and what is noteworthy is that management time by its members for implementing projects are done free given the ethos ‘service before self’.”
