The chairpersons of HNB and NDB have resigned with immediate effect, a move which will enable the appointment of people earmarked by the new regime along with a new Board of Directors. HNB announced that at a special Board meeting yesterday Chairperson Dr. Ranee Jayamaha had conveyed her desire to relinquish her position. She had given prior notification that she would not attempt to seek re-election as a Director at the AGM which is to be held on Monday at 10.00 a.m. Ex-Central Banker Jayamaha was appointed Director and Chairperson on 31 March 2011. HNB said that until the Board was reconstituted, during the interim period, existing Director Rose Cooray had been appointed Chairperson with immediate effect. NDB, in a separate statement, said that Chairman Sunil Wijesinha had indicated his personal wish to step down and tendered his resignation from the Board with immediate effect. He served the bank for over one year. NDB did not announce an Interim Chairman. NDB will have its AGM also on Monday. Commercial Bank and Seylan Bank are also likely to announce the resignation of their Chairmen. Change at the top in all of these banks has been on the cards since the defeat of President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Government on 8 January 2015. State banks heads were replaced along with the appointment of new Board of Directors.
