  • Non-Cabinet Ministers Ajith P. Perera and Sujeewa Senasinghe told to show cause before 9 Sept.
  • Party to appoint disciplinary committee to take action

The United National Party (UNP) has launched disciplinary inquiries against Ministers Ajith P. Perera and Sujeewa Senasinghe and demanded they present explanations on their conduct before 9 September.

The letters were issued by UNP General Secretary and Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam to both Non-Cabinet Minister of Digital Infrastructure and Information Technology Ajith P. Perera and Non-Cabinet Minister of Science, Technology and Research Sujeewa Senasinghe.

The letters note that statements made by Perera and Senasinghe criticising the UNP, its Leader and its Executive Committee are in contravention of the party Constitution and therefore both Parliamentarians must show cause for their conduct.

Responses explaining their conduct have been requested by Kariyawasam to be presented to him on or before 9 September. The missives will then be forwarded to a disciplinary committee to be appointed by the party for further deliberations.

Kariyawasam in his letter also stated that he has been updated on the comments and statements made by Perera and Senasinghe that have been widely publicised on mainstream media and social media outlets and therefore it was necessary for him to start a disciplinary inquiry.

Both Perera and Senasinghe have been open supporters of UNP Deputy Leader and Housing Minister Sajith Premadasa’s attempts to be selected as the presidential candidate of the party. They were both present at the rallies organised in Badulla and Matara this month.
