Total COVID-19 cases cross 1,000 mark

  • 28 Navy personnel test positive, brings total cumulative cases to 1,023
  • 10 more persons recover; total recoveries rise to 569
  • 98 persons released from Palaly Quarantine Centre

 THIRTY ONE persons tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday and the total number of confirmed cases in the island reached 1,023, as a Navy cluster continued to grow. 

From the 31 confirmed cases, 28 persons were Navy personnel being quarantined at the Oluvil Quarantine Centre, a statement issued by the Department of Government Information said. Of the total confirmed cases, 578 were identified from the Sri Lanka Navy, 68 among local communities at quarantine centres, and 49 among overseas arrivals at quarantine centres.

Yesterday’s situation report by the Epidemiology Unit showed that the number of persons identified from the Colombo, Gampaha, and Puttalam Districts remains unchanged at 150, 36, and 35 respectively.

With the new cases, the number of patients under medical care has increased to 445, including 156 at the Navy Hospital, 95 at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), and 56 at the Colombo East Base Hospital.

The total number of recoveries in the country is 569. This includes six persons from the NIID, two from the Iranawila Hospital, and two from the Homagama Base Hospital who were discharged yesterday having recovered from COVID-19.

In addition to this, 135 suspect patients, including 61 at the Navy Hospital, are currently under investigation and the Health Promotion Bureau stated that a total of 45,351 tests have been conducted so far, including 960 yesterday.

While quarantine measures continue to be carried out, the Sri Lanka Air Force, on their website, stated that 98 persons were released from the Palaly Quarantine Centre yesterday. These persons were residents of Bandaranayake Mawatha who have been at the quarantine centre since 22 April.
