TT to be powered with generator: Ranil

• Temple Trees to be taken off grid till power cuts end
• Tells public officials to use generators at their State institutions
• Recommends appointing officials to find ways to reduce power use in Govt. offices 
  
   

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday called on the public sector to take measures to curb electricity consumption, saying that he will use generators to power Temple Trees till the power shortage is resolved.

Wickremesinghe said this while addressing the 36th AGM of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service (SLAS).“The members of the Committee that was appointed to find a remedy for the recent power shortage requested me to inform all the SLAS officials to take measures to manage the power of the Government institutions due to the recent situation,” Wickremesinghe said. Wickremesinghe noted the move to use generators to provide electricity for Government institutions would only be a temporary measure.

The Government is expecting to use generators for power needs at all Government institutions, including Ministries and Pradeshiya Sabha buildings.

“There is a generator in Temple Trees, so I have informed officials to use that instead of the electricity from the national grid, until this crisis is solved,” he added.

He informed the officials that Government institutions which did not have generators should take measures to manage power to remedy the situation.

Wickremesinghe emphasised that the situation would be improved within the next seven days, as the Government had already taken necessary action to solve the power crisis, with the help of experts.

He noted that further actions would be informed to Parliament and the Cabinet by the three-member Committee on 2 April. 

Wickremesinghe said the Government had informed the Secretaries of all Ministries to appoint an official to manage power in the institution. “The Secretary of the Power and Energy Ministry will meet the officials tomorrow, to brief the situation and provide guidance on appointing an appropriate official to manage power,” he added.

He said the three-member Committee would observe whether officials had followed the guidance of the Government on 1 April.
