Sugarcane farmers protested at Embilipitiya town last Friday, calling for strict enforcement of the ban on ethanol imports to protect the local industry.

Following the ban on the import of ethanol in January, local sugarcane farmers stated they have a better market for their produce with prices on the rise. This has been a great boon for the local sugar industry as a whole, they say.

The protest was headed by former Parliamentarian Janaka Wakkumbura, who added efforts are under way by certain businesses to lift the ban on ethanol imports, and clear illegal shipments lying at the Colombo Port. The participants protested against these alleged efforts, and demanded the ban on ethanol imports not be lifted to protect the local industry.

Wakkumbura and the protestors stated they wish to bring this matter to the attention of the President, and they would resort to firmer action in the event any steps are taken to remove the import ban.
