Retd. Major General Chandrasiri appointed to BOC Board

Finance Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has appointed Major General (Retd.) G.A. Chandrasiri as a Non-Executive Director to the Board of Bank of Ceylon (BOC).

He is the incumbent Chairman of Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd., since December 2019.

Following the latest appointment, the BOC Board of Directors comprises Kanchana Ratwatte (Chairman), G. Harsha Wijayawardhana, Anura Christopher Manilka Fernando, Major General (Retd.) G.A. Chandrasiri, and R.M.P. Rathnayake (ex officio Director from Treasury).

Previously, he held the position of Governor of the Northern Province from 2009 to 2015. His dedicated and committed service during his five-and-a-half-year tenure as the Governor assisted immensely in rebuilding the lives of the people of the war-ravaged Northern Province.

During his illustrious military career of 35 years, he had held a number of key command and staff appointments in the Army. He is a product of the elite Cavalry Army, and he commanded the prestigious Armoured Brigade—two infantry divisions in the North—prior to becoming the Commander of the Security Forces Headquarters in Jaffna from 2005 to 2009. He also served as the Military Security Coordinator to the President from 1999 to 2002. 

He was also privileged to hold the posts of Principal Staff Officer at the Joint Operations Command Headquarters and Regimental Commander of the Army Special Forces. 

At the final stage of his military career, he was appointed as the Chief of Staff of the Army. In addition to his duties as the Chief of Staff, he functioned as the Competent Authority for the administration of Internally Displaced People in the Northern Province.

In recognition of his service, he was awarded a number of medals and decorations, including Rana Wickram Padakkama (RWP), Vishishta Sewa Vibushanaya (VSV), and Uththama Sewa Padakkama (USP).

He is a graduate of the prestigious National Defence College, India, and Defence Services Command and Staff College, Bangladesh. At present, he is reading for his Ph.D. at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Sri Lanka.
