  • NCM shows JVP’s commitment to defeat conspiracy hatched by President and Mahinda Rajapaksa
  • Unlimited power concentrated in hands of one individual dangerous and detrimental to democracy
  • Will reintroduce 20th Amendment soon to curb Executive powers

JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake defended the process by which the no confidence motion against Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his Government was passed in Parliament yesterday, saying the due process was adopted by the House.

The JVP Leader who moved the no confidence motion which was seconded by JVP MP Vijitha Herath said that the House had the power to suspend Standing Orders and take up  any matter and rejected claims by the UPFA that the motion was not duly passed. Speaking to reporters after the passing of the motion, MP Dissanayake said that the JVP was committed to fighting the conspiracy hatched by President Maithripala Sirisena and Mahinda Rajapaksa to destroy democracy in the country.

“The JVP is a party that has suffered at the hands of both the major parties and we value democracy and will always come forward to defend it.”

“The JVP gave an undertaking on 26 October that we would take all measures to defeat this political conspiracy. Despite the conspiracy, the conspirators could not get a majority to stay on,” he said.

The JVP Leader said that one lesson to take away from the political developments in the past days was that the concentration of unlimited power in the hands of one individual, whosoever that maybe, was dangerous and detrimental to democracy.

He said that the JVP would reintroduce the 20th Amendment which seeks to abolish the executive presidency and vest more powers with Parliament shortly and this should be supported by all parties in Parliament as well as the citizens of this country.

The JVP had presented the Bill to the House in September this year as a Private Member’s Bill but with the prorogation of Parliament the Bill has lapsed and has to be reintroduced.
