  • Kitul industry to be developed as an export
  • To be recognised as a main plantation crop

Considering its popularity, the Government has decided to elevate kitul as a main plantation crop and establish a Kitul Development Board.

The provision, which received Cabinet approval on Monday, was made considering the importance of kitul production and the number of people involved in the industry, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said.

“The kitul-related production industry which is endemic to Sri Lanka is recognised as a high potential industry for earning foreign exchange while various actions have been taken to uplift the kitul industry during the previous periods,” he said.

It has been recognised that expansion of kitul-related industry under the program to create a people-centred economy across local production implemented by the present Govermment is appropriate.

Therefore, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal submitted by Plantation Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana for nominating kitul crop as a main plantation crop and the establishment of a Kitul Development Board.
