Asia’s first Carbon Neutral Pest Control Company The Exterminators Ltd., announced a global first with their proprietary ‘Specialised Anti-Microbial Disinfection Service,’ that is focused on countering the spread of the current global pandemic of COVID-19. The local pest management company stated that they were successful in obtaining the globally recognised Carbon Neutral certification for their dedicated service, further demonstrating their continuous commitment towards the environment. The audit to measure the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions associated with the delivery of this service in Sri Lanka was conducted by the Carbon Consulting Company (CCC), which has been guiding the Exterminators on their sustainability journey in managing and mitigating their organisational emissions for the past six consecutive years. This latest achievement is also a part of a larger vision of the pest control company to become a more responsible corporate citizen.

The Carbon Neutral Certification for the specialised disinfection service of the Exterminators was awarded by the Sustainable Future Group (SFG), Sri Lanka’s only sustainability verification and certification body that is accredited to verify and validate Organisational and Project-level GHG emissions inventories under ISO 14064. SFG is also the regional partner of the London-based Natural Capital Partners, the proprietor of The Carbon Neutral Protocol that governs the global certification, who was recently recognised as the “Best Carbon Offset Retailer” in the world for a record ninth consecutive year. Once the overall emissions of the activities related to the delivery of the selected service was determined, SFG facilitated the purchase of the requisite amount of internationally registered Carbon Credits that directly support renewable energy projects in developing countries through the Carbon Registry of Natural Capital Partners, in order to make the Carbon Footprint net zero.

During this extremely difficult time for local communities and businesses alike due to the ongoing pandemic, this initiative of The Exterminators in training and setting up a team of experts to provide a specialised disinfectant service to the country is nothing short of commendable. Since launching the service on the 15th of March this year, the firm has disinfected 71 Homes for the elderly to help protect those most vulnerable to COVID-19, 29 Police Stations, 15 religious sites and 12 public places free of charge. The Exterminators have also disinfected quarantine centres around the country as well as the “Lotus Tower”, with their teams having travelled over 5,700 kms to date solely for this purpose. It is noteworthy to mention that none of the locations disinfected with this special treatment have reported any COVID-19 cases. “As Sri Lanka’s pioneering and premier disinfection business, achieving this certification status was an important milestone for our company in the current crisis situation”, stated Founder/Managing Director The Exterminators Marlon Ferreira. “Based on our internal research, we believe our anti-microbial disinfection service is most probably the world’s first such service to be certified as Carbon Neutral. We will continue to provide this unique service to our communities for as long as the threat of COVID-19 remains, and we look forward to taking on new challenges in 2020 and the decade ahead by providing game-changing anti-microbial disinfection and pest management solutions in the region, by designing, developing and articulating environmentally sustainable and health and safety focused business practices.”
