The Cabinet has approved the construction of three flyovers near Slave Island Railway Station at a cost of Rs. 6 billion aimed at reducing congestion during peak traffic hours. 

Under the proposed plan, two flyovers will be constructed over the railway lines at Uttarananda Mawatha and Judge Akbar Mawatha near the Slave Island Railway Station. The location of the third flyover was unspecified in the Cabinet briefing. A one-way traffic plan has also been approved by the Cabinet after it the area was identified as the most congested area during peak traffic hour by the Ministry of Highways. 

According to Co-Cabinet Spokesman Udaya Gammanpila said that the congestion at the two location last for several hours on a daily basis. The planned flyover near Sri Uttarananda Mawatha will be 420 m in length, while a flyover near the Justice Akbar Mawatha is expected to be 350 m in length.  The Cabinet approved the proposal presented by Highways Minister Johnston Fernando. The Ministry will implement the project, calling for bids from eligible local contractors for the construction.
