CCC says deeply concerned about law and order

• Calls for all measures to maintain peace in letter to Defence Secretary, copied to Acting IGP and Army Commander
• Requests greater transparency on investigations into suspects accused of terror links     

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) yesterday said it remained deeply concerned about the law and order situation in the country and called on Defence Secretary General Shantha Kottegoda to take all measures to maintain peace. 

CCC CEO Dhara Wijayatilake writing to the top official, in a letter copied to the Army Commander, Acting IGP and Chief of Defence staff, appealed for more transparency on the investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks. 

“We also need to understand whether all allegations against those who are suspected and accused of engaging in terrorist activities have in fact been investigated and that the administration of justice process has been complied with and that we can have confidence that all suspicions are being adequately investigated irrespective of the positions being held by those who are suspected to be involved,” the letter said. 

It also pointed out that action must be taken to prevent “unlawful and disruptive” activities that would undermine inter-communal harmony.       

“The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce is deeply concerned about the possibility that events that threaten the law and order situation in the country, will unfold. This concern stems from positions taken and utterances made very recently by certain parties.”

“As the highest ranking official vested with responsibility for the maintenance of law and order, we expect you will ensure that all necessary measures are taken to maintain peace, law and order and prevent the occurrence of unlawful and disruptive activities that will disturb the peace of the communities,” it added.
