Bouquets and brickbats for new Cabinet from Opposition

Several Opposition members took to social media to congratulate the newly appointed Cabinet of Ministers.

Samagi Jana Balawegaya ((SBJ) MP elect Harsha de Silva took to Twitter to congratulate all the Cabinet and State Ministers including Namal Rajapaksa and Ajith Nivard Cabraal. “We will be a responsible Opposition, but the Government has a huge responsibility now to deliver on its promises and maintain democracy,” De Silva said.

Former Sports Minister Harin Fernando who is tipped to enter Parliament as an SJB National List MP congratulated Namal Rajapaksa who was appointed Minister of Youth and Sports. “I hope he upholds the work we did in creating an environment where sports were free of politics & corruption. I am certain you will do great as you yourself are a sportsman. All the best,” said Fernando in a Twitter message.

Former MP Mangala Samaraweera lauded the appointment of Ali Sabry as the new Justice Minister despite Opposition by “the voice cut sadhus”, but added that the rest of Cabinet is uninspired, and the subjects of State Ministers are hilarious.

Earlier he expressed concerns about the President gazetting ‘Home Affairs’ as a subject under the Defence Ministry calling it a “sinister first step in laying the foundation for a Chinese style surveillance”.
