13 new COVID-19 cases brings total to 1,656

  • 13 new cases identified 
  • 12 persons, including four Navy personnel, discharged following recovery
  • Over 66,400 OCR tests conducted so far

 13 new COVID-19 cases were identified yesterday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 1,656.

With the exception of the new cases, 800 of the confirmed cases are Navy personnel and their close contacts, 527 are Sri Lankan returnees from abroad, 313 are other local cases, and three are foreigners.

The Epidemiology Unit states that 822 persons are under medical care, including 144 at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), 109 at the Welisara Navy Hospital, 107 at the Hambantota District General Hospital, 97 at the Homagama Base Hospital, 93 at the Welikanda Base Hospital, 92 at the Kattankudy Base Hospital, and 50 at the Iranawila Hospital.

A further 44 patients are receiving treatment at the Minuwangoda Base Hospital, 41 at the Colombo East Base Hospital, 29 at the Teldeniya Base Hospital, and three at the Panagoda Army Hospital.

Twelve persons were discharged following recovery from COVID-19 yesterday, and this includes five from the NIID, four from the Homagama Base Hospital, two from the Minuwangoda Base Hospital, and one from the Colombo East Base Hospital.

The recoveries include four Navy personnel, three who were receiving treatment at the Homagama Base Hospital and one who was receiving treatment at the NIID. The Sri Lanka Navy stated that, including these four persons, a total of 415 Navy personnel have recovered from COVID-19. All Navy personnel are required to quarantine for a further 14 days after being discharged.

The total recoveries in the country has increased to 823 and the Epidemiology Unit states that 84 suspect patients are under observation at several hospitals.

According to the Health Promotion Bureau, 66,421 PCR tests have been conducted in the country, including 1,066 on Monday. A significant number of patients identified continue to be asymptomatic, including 10 of the 13 patients identified on 31 May, 52 of the 62 identified on 30 May, and 23 of the 28 identified on 29 May.

In addition to this, the Defence Ministry stated that 5,038 persons are under quarantine at 44 centres in the country. They added that 11,558 persons have left the centres having completed the quarantine process.

According to the Sri Lanka Navy, six persons left the Boossa Quarantine Centre yesterday and two persons left the Kalpitiya Quarantine Centre the day before having completed the mandatory quarantine process.

They added that, in total, 224 persons have left the Boossa Quarantine Centre and 24 persons have left the Kalpitiya Quarantine Centre. In addition to this, 93 persons remain at the Boossa centre and 21 remain at the Kalpitiya centre.
