Jayamaha, Gamage appointed to HNB Board

The Board of Hatton National Bank PLC has appointed Dr. Ranee Jayamaha and Dr Willie W. Gamage as Independent Non-Executive Directors with effect from 31 March 2011, according to a press release issued by the bank.

Dr. Jayamaha is currently an Advisor to the President. She had been the Deputy Governor in charge of Financial System Stability of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka from 2004 up to her retirement at end of May 2009.



She has over 37 years of extensive experience in the fields of economics, banking, finance, regulation and administration, having held a number of positions in the Central Bank and outside.

While on release from the Central Bank, she has served as Secretary – Presidential Commission on Finance and Banking, Advisor – Financial Sector Reform Committee, Ministry of Finance, Special Advisor (Economic) – Common Wealth Secretariat, London, U.K.  

In addition, Dr. Jayamaha has been a Member of the Working Group on General Payment System Development of the Bank for International Settlements, Member of the Global Payments Forum, Member of the Advisory Panel of the G-8 Remittances Working Group and Member of the Expert Panel of the Safeguard Assessment Policy Review 2010 of the IMF.

She has been a Member of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka, the Insurance Board of Sri Lanka, the Chairperson of the Credit Information Bureau of Sri Lanka and the National Payments Council.

Dr. Jayamaha has authored several articles for local and international journals and more recently, she had been providing advisory services to a number of financial institutions and the Central Banks in the Region.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Degree from the University of Ceylon Peradeniya, M.Sc in Economics from the University of Stirling, U.K. and a Ph.D in Monetary Economics from the University of Bradford, U.K.

Dr. Willie W. Gamage currently serves as the Secretary to the Ministry of State Resources and Enterprises Development, while serving as the Chairman/CEO of the Strategic Enterprise Management Agency (SEMA).

He has over 30 years of wide experience in the public, private and non-governmental organisations, having served several of such organisations in different capacities.  He has extensive experience in formulating and implementing several projects on poverty alleviation, local economic development, promoting alternative energy generation and enhancing capacities in public enterprises.

Dr. Gamage has also contributed immensely to the local and regional development initiatives in the areas of rural water supply and sanitation, small scale fisheries development, community development, municipal solid waste management, rural enterprise development and rural housing development.

He holds a B.Sc Degree in Economics & Management from the University College of London, U.K., Masters in Business Studies from the University of Colombo and a Ph.D from the Rajarata University.
