New CEO assumes office at SMB Leasing

SMB Leasing PLC has announced that the new CEO Supul Wijesinghe has assumed office with effect from 1 January.

He replaced Sumedha Fernando who resigned on 31 December 2019. 

Wijesinghe was originally appointed as the Chief Executive Officer by the Board of Directors in September 2019 and the appointment was approved by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka in October 2019 to be effective from 1 January.

Wijesinghe counts for 21 years’ experience in audit, risk management, accounting, financial reporting, financial management, strategic planning, business transformation, compliance, treasury management and performance analysis.

He holds a BSc in Business Administration from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and a Masters in Accounting and Finance from the University of Kelaniya. He’s a Fellow Member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants – UK, Fellow Member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants – UK and a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka.

Having commenced his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) where he last served as an Assistant Manager, Supul joined The World Bank as a Financial Management Specialist and worked in Bank’s operations in Sri Lanka, Maldives and Pakistan for over five years and then went on to join 3M, a Fortune 500 Company, as the Country Finance Head for 3M’s operation in Sri Lanka, a position he held until he joined SMB Leasing PLC in March 2017 as the Chief Financial Officer and Head of Strategy. 

Sumedha joined SMB Leasing in 2008 as the Director Marketing (Non-Board) and then served as Chief Operating Officer before being promoted as the Chief Executive Officer in November 2010. 

Sumedha was instrumental in turning around the company from its loss status of Rs. 600 million in 2008 and growing the balance sheet to its Rs. 1.6 billion at present.
