Fashion Films enjoy a close relationship with the world of fashion and in its fourth season CFW Fashion Films presented by OLU Swim Week Colombo highlighted the work of high potential Sri Lankan film directors to a gathering of fashion and film lovers at Scope Cinemas at the Colombo City Centre on Sunday, 4 August.

CFW Fashion Films showcases the power of creativity when two visual streams such as fashion and film come together. CFW Fashion Films has established itself as a platform to merge the creative talents of both designers and young film directors to communicate their outstanding vision and creative depth.

Each young film director was paired with a fashion designer to bring their collection concepts to life. This season, the film directors were challenged and given more creative freedom as they had to each work with a one- or two-word brief given to them by the fashion designer. They then had to use these words as a base, interpret it in their own way and express the final outcome through a one-minute fashion film for all to enjoy. The films are then evaluated by a panel of judges and the winner receives a Fashion Film Award. This year’s Fashion Film award winner will receive a return air ticket to Istanbul, courtesy of Fashion Films partner, Turkish Airlines.

“I’ve always enjoyed the intimate relationship that films have with fashion as both industries express creativity in a very dynamic form and both play a role in promoting each other. Hence, we included fashion films as part of fashion week four years ago to celebrate this relationship and I’m so encouraged to see this relationship grow every year to reach a level where these are screened at Scope Cinemas,” said Colombo Fashion Week Founder and Managing Director Ajai Vir Singh.

CFW Fashion Films was shown on the big screen for the first time in partnership with Scope Cinemas. Speaking on the subject, Scope Cinemas Chairman Naveed Cader said, “We are excited about the partnership with CFW. This was an idea discussed some time ago and we are happy to be a part of this event. Our intention is to work with CFW and grow this brand to empower more film makers in Sri Lanka to realise their potential and give them a structure enabling them to take their productions to the rest of the world.”

The Fashion Films event showcased the creations of seven young high-potential film directors namely, Shameem Ismail, Chathura Goonatillake, Yasodhara Kariyawasam, Mohammed Mubasshir, Rajika Thilakarathna, Gayan Ruchiranga, Ravindu and Madu Rumesh. The Fashion Film Award was won by Chathura Goonatillake for his collaboration with designer label Meraki and the way in which he brought the concept ‘Mystical Monsoon’ to life.
