India and Sri Lanka to celebrate 70 years of independence together

  • Bollywood fame Kavita Krishnamurthy and Violin wizard Dr. L. Subramaniam are coming to Colombo to perform in joint celebration of 70 years of independence of India and Sri Lanka on Wednesday, 17 January

 High Commission of India, Colombo is organising a special cultural event ‘Bollywood and Beyond’ on 17 January 2018 in Colombo. The special event is being organised to jointly celebrate 70 years of India and Sri Lanka, popularly termed as ‘India and Sri Lanka @ 70’. 

‘Bollywood and Beyond’, a musical evening would showcase the beautiful blending of Indian and Western classical music with popular Bollywood songs. It features violin maestro Dr. L. Subramaniam, world famous singer Kavita Krishnamurthy, composer Bindu Subramaniam and eminent musicians from different parts of India.

Padma Bhushan Dr. L. Subramaniam, is one of the world’s best musician and composer to master Carnatic Classical Music and Western Classical Music He has composed music for award winning films including “Salaam Bombay” and “Mississippi Masala” and was the featured soloist for Bernardo Bertolucci’s “Little Buddha” and “Cotton Mary” of Merchant Ivory Productions. Padma Shri Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam, known as the melody queen, is undoubtedly one of the leading singers in the Bollywood film industry singing more than 15,000 songs in almost all Indian languages. Apart from coveted Padma Shree from the President of India in 2005 she has been honoured with three consecutive Film Fare awards for best play back singer, a feat rarely achieved. The duo will be accompanied by their immensely talented singer composer daughter Bindu Subramaniam. The treasures of music will be provided by eminent musicians such as Tanmoy Bose in Tabla, Frijo Francis in Keyboard, Sanjay Marathe in Keyboard, Alwyn Dominic Fernandes in Guitar, Keith Peters in Bass guitar, Prasad Kulkarni in Octopad and percussion, Satya Sai in Mridangam. 

The performance will be held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Convention Hall (Main auditorium) at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, 17 January. Ministry of Internal Affairs, Wayamba Development and Cultural Affairs, Government of Sri Lanka, Lanka Indian Oil Corporation, Jet Airways, India Sri Lanka Foundation, and Taj Samudra have partnered for the event.

Bollywood Magic- Hindi Film “BhaagMilkhaBhaag” 

at Indian Cultural Centre

Indian Cultural Centre will be screening Hindi Film “BhaagMilkhaBhaag”at 6.00 pm on Friday 19 January2018at Indian Cultural Centre auditorium located at 16/2, Gregory’s Road, Colombo 07. BhaagMilkhaBhaag(Hindi with English sub titles)released in 2013 is an Indian biographical sports drama  direct RakeyshOmprakashMehra from a script written by Prasoon Joshi. The story is based on the life of Milkha Singh, an Indian athlete who was a national champion runner and an Olympian. The film is inspired by his autobiography, titled The Race of My Life co-written by Singh and his daughter, Sonia Sanwalka.The film is done with the background of the Partition of India in 1947 which caused chaos  resulted in mass religious violence in Punjab in British India, killing the parents of Milkha Singh. Living in impoverished refugee camps, Milkha lives a life of honesty and makes it to the world of sports. The film  casts Farhan Akhtar in the lead role with Art Malik  and Sonam Kapoor, Music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Sports was coordinated by the American action director Rob Miller of Reel Sports.
