‘Yan Can Cook’ popular TV show host Master Chef Martin Yan was introduced by Manik Suriyaaratchi; Managing Director of Omega Global and ANC Omega – the local partner for prestigious Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management – as an initiative to pitch Sri Lanka as a high-end tourist destination, where there is a need to enhance the fading art of fine dining etiquette and increase the appreciation of quality Sri Lankan produce locally and internationally.

Master Chef Martin Yan who is famous for his extravagant culinary performances from Shanghai to San Francisco and is widely accepted and recognised by all age groups in Sri Lanka was brought here by Omega Global in order to provide a platform to obtain international exposure to young and upcoming individuals in the leisure and hospitality sector and also to benchmark industry standards.

Having partnered with The Kingsbury and Chefs Guild of Sri Lanka, Emirates Academy showcased an eight-course culinary experience to a panel of local business leaders and international food critics. The phenomenal menu was curated by Chef Gerard Mendis with his vision of incorporating local produce ranging from Jaffna grapes to Hikka lobster.

It was facilitated by Chef Kithsiri De Silva, Dinithi, Rewatha, Iyanthaand team at the Kingsbury Hotel; complete with wine pairing and novel ideas of after meal tea and coffee by Kopi Kade and Coffee Bean teams. The Marinated Jaffna grapes in Kir Royale Champagne and Rosemary truffle was the highlight of this outstanding menu.

Chef Yan also enjoyed a boat ride with local legend Chef Dimuthu Kumarasinghe discovering the unique attributes and exotic habitat of Madu River and the infamous cinnamon islands when he was visiting the southern strip of Sri Lanka. He will be embarking on an international production of a 13-episode TV series – ‘Yan’s Taste of Sri Lanka’ – covering the UNESCO Heritage sites and renowned tourism destinations to capture unique culinary offerings, culture and the people of Sri Lanka.
