Rahula College Old Boys tackle waste disposal problem with ‘Lassana Rahula Project’

Whenever we open a newspaper or watch television, it’s always the problem of waste disposal that we read and see. Get on to the road, everywhere there is waste dumped. The people walk with their noses closed scolding the Government and the local body. As much as the waste problem affects the homes, roads and workplaces, so are the schools.

Waste disposal was a severe health issue for a long time at Rahula College, Matara. The principal and the school management were trying their best to solve the problem. The Old Boys ‘97 Group then came on the scene. After a quick survey they came up with several solutions. The ‘Lassana Rahula Project’ was presented to the school authorities.

The ‘Lassana Rahula Project’ included practical answers to the problem. Separating and classifying the waste material prior to removing them was one. Minimising the waste material that is either brought into the school or get collected in school daily was another. A third was re-cycling the waste material within the school premises. 

The Lassana Rahula Project got off to a flying start on 18 June when containers were kept at strategic points within the school premises to methodically separate the waste material. A systematic method of getting rid of the waste was also presented to the students. Alongside this initiative, the principal declared the school premises a ‘No polythene zone’.
