Soorya gives new lease on life with prosthetic limbs

Sun Match Company Ltd., founded by top entrepreneur T.R.R. Rajan, producers of the leading brand ‘Soorya’ provided a new lease on life for patients of the Centre for Handicapped, Kandy.

The project titled #helpmewalkagain was conducted in commemoration of the 17th death anniversary of the founder of the company, T.R.R. Rajan. Held annually, the program is a magnanimous effort by the management and staff of Sun Match Company who seek to provide relief to the deserving folk of the island. 

Speaking on behalf of the company, Sun Match Director and daughter of its founder Gowri Rajan said, “Physically disabled persons account for almost 10% of people throughout the country and many of them are sadly amputees.”  

“Even though amputations are often the most effective measure taken by surgeons in order to save lives in the case of accidents and debilitating diseases such as diabetes and cancer, we also see instances of individuals who have been born without limbs that needs attention by society and this is where we as a company are focusing on assisting,” explained Rajan, who was the first female Governor of Rotary and a World Bank(IFC)/ WIM-recognised awardee of the Top 50 Women in Sri Lanka. 

Experts in this field of study say that rehabilitation and the provision of locomotor aids can make an impact on a disabled person’s future; empowering them to lead a productive and dignified life where they can contribute to society in their own way without feeling like a burden.

The 31 January project of the ‘Sun Match Company’ was a memorable one, as 12 prosthetic limbs were donated to the patients at the Centre for Handicapped, Kandy. The amputees were identified months prior to the ceremony and their measurements obtained, as the prosthetics have to be custom made.

Rajan further stated, “Prosthetic care is quite expensive and many patients lack the financial resources to obtain artificial limbs. Therefore, many amputees today are forced to sacrifice their freedom and independence and are often never able to perform the day to day tasks. An artificial limb can make the difference to these people and provide not only a means to mobility but also a means of living.” Branded #helpmewalkagain, the Sun Match Company that pioneered this project is a market leader in Sri Lanka.
