The Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa Alumni is happy to share with you one of the signature projects of the club, “Kindred Kidneys” which was initiated on the 14th of March 2019 by Rtr. Shenali Welikala on the World Kidney Day.

Kidney diseases are a type of ailment which causes severe pain, grief and monetary cost to the patients and their loved ones which often results in death. Therefore, it is crucial to detect and treat this dangerous disease in its early stages. For that, people should be aware and those who need help should be assisted with continuous guidance.

Therefore, this project is carried out as a sustainable initiative aimed at providing awareness and guidance to eradicate kidney related health ailments. We are happy to say that the project is also carried out by other global Rotaract clubs and will be continued in the years to come as a sustainable project, in line with the third Sustainable Development Goal to ensure ‘Good Health and Well Being’. Rotaract clubs from Bolivia, Egypt and Mexico have participated in the project alongside Sri Lanka.

Thereby the club has teamed up with “Samastha Lanka Kidney Patients’ Association” where the club members volunteered to sell the ‘Wakugaduwa’ newspaper to the general public. All the funds collected are donated to provide free dialysis treatments to underprivileged patients.

The Wakugaduwa newspaper is one of the first Sri Lankan Kidney health awareness newspapers which covers many areas of kidney health awareness in each publication. Till date we have conducted six phases of the project and have helped the volunteers of the Samastha Lanka Kidney Patients Association to raise funds by selling the newspaper at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya every month.

Furthermore, the Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa Alumni was appreciated for the volunteering commitment it launched to help the Kidney patients in Sri Lanka at the “Annual Social Welfare Function” organized by Samastha Lanka Kidney Patient’s Association this year.

The club hopes to continue this project in the years to come in a much larger scale. As the next step we are planning to have an island wide awareness session, especially in the dry zones, regarding the steps that should be taken to avoid the disease.

You can also join us to save lives and help eradicate this deadly ailment by buying a newspaper next time you meet us at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya. We will be playing: “Bond to save a kidney. Bond to save a life”. For more details please visit the club’s official Facebook page (Rotaract Alumni Mora).
