Methodist College Auditorium

Methodist College, Colombo, is a school which has maintained an exemplary record and standard in the arts. Its school choir is one of the best in the country and has won several international awards in Vietnam, China, and more recently at the Asia-Pacific Choir Games and Grand Prix of Nations held in Colombo in 2017.

The choir competed in the Youth Choirs category and emerged Asia Pacific Champions, then going on to win the Grand Prix of Nations as well. They were the only Sri Lanka school choir to achieve the double-feat.

The school is reputed and respected for the cutting edge original theatre it produces, created by its own students (it frequently wins first place in the all-island one-act-play school competition). Methodist College has a strong reputation for working with artists and for producing students who have excelled in the creative fields. Central to this vibrant culture of youth creativity is the school auditorium – which was built in 1988 but which is now in need of refurbishment.

The OGA of Methodist College is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. This special year their focus will be the remodelling and renovating of the school auditorium with new seating, a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system and facilities to better enable the hosting of events - ranging from school functions to public performances. This timely initiative will contribute centrally to strengthening the already strong reputation of Methodist College as a school that leads in the creative arts.

Maximum opportunity, investment and support for creative expression of its students is in line with the well-rounded education, inclusive values and commitment to high quality extra-curricular activities that the school is well-known for.

This considerable undertaking can only succeed with the loyal support of the entire membership of the MC-OGA and all other past pupils within Sri Lanka and overseas. The OGA is confident that the past pupils of Methodist College, who have benefited from the grounded education given to them by their Alma Mater, will rally round to give the iconic Metho Auditorium a much-needed lease of new life, purpose and energy.

The fundraiser for the auditorium is a Dinner Dance titled ‘A Night in Venice’ on 26 October, at the Waters’ Edge Grand Ball Room. This year’s centenary celebrations, which began in February with a High Tea, will culminate in a Thanksgiving Service and the 100th Annual General Meeting in November.

To support the project, call the MCOGA Secretary Sashika on 0777876325 or email [email protected]. Let’s pay tribute to a tradition that honours diversity and unbroken bonds at Metho.
