YMCA of Moratuwa joined hands with the YMCA brothers and sisters throughout the world in celebrating 175 years of volunteerism by participating in the ‘YMCA World Challenge 2019’. The movement established in 1844 in London has spread to 119 countries and over 68 million members. Every year the YMCAs around the world celebrate the founder’s day with a worldwide event.

This year’s theme was 175 minutes of volunteer work. The Moratuwa ‘Y’ chose to clean one of the areas of the beach of Moratuwa with the participation of the children's club and leaders. Altogether 32 volunteers took part in the world challenge. The inorganic waste collected through the exercise was collected by the Moratuwa Municipal Council waste management service. This exercise by the children not only sent a message to the elders who watched the cleaning process but also educated them on the need to protect the environment.
