Lions Club of Balangoda, Taiwanese conduct multiservice project

The Lions Club of Balangoda, together with the LEO District Council of District 306C2, with the assistance of the people of Taiwan, conducted a multi-service project in Balangoda covering three grama niladhari divisions.

Upon a request made by the Lions of Balangoda, the people of Taiwan donated essential items to be distributed among Sri Lankan citizens in need. Upon a gesture of the Taiwanese, the Lions of Balangoda conducted four major health camps and assisted those in need. As part of the Independence Day project, the Lions distributed dry rations to underprivileged families, wheelchairs to the disabled, sewing machines for women to form startups and create avenues of self-employment, schoolbooks to children and spectacles for those in need. The Lions Club of Balangoda also donated furniture to four schools while also handing out cheques to over four schools for the construction of common facilities such as toilets.

The Past District Governor of Lions District 306C2 Lion Dr. Lasantha Goonewardena thanked the people of Taiwan for their kind assistance, especially those from the Taiwan cultural centre in India for their cooperation in these humanitarian projects in Sri Lanka. 

He highlighted that during past disaster situations Taiwan had assisted Sri Lanka in numerous ways by sending in medical teams, container loads of rice and offering other humanitarian assistance. He stated that the medical team from Taiwan had conducted four special medical camps in Balangoda during the past five years. He also thanked the Lions of Balangoda for coordinating and organising these projects.

The Lions and Leos of Lions District 306C2, Government sector representatives and police officers who assisted in organising this massive project were also present at the event.
