Lions Club international’s district 306 A1 has conducted many community upliftment projects in the coastal towns of South. The latest projects were successfully concluded in Sellakataragama and Beruwala.

“Lions Club International has identified seven key elements of community issues that needs to be addressed in the global scale. As such, many projects conducted in south by Lions Club International district 306 A1 were focused on such issues, namely blood sugar level related issues, optometry issues, food habits, environment, child cancers, youth issues, humanitarian issues and disaster relief,” stated Lion Sri Lal Fernando, the Governor of Lions Club Sri Lanka.

“Due to the fact that most parents are ill informed and unavailability of proper resources, many young children lose their lives to cancer. We have identified this need and have concluded it as one of the main areas that Lions club district 306 A1 will address though our community service projects. In addition, annually, over 20000 are affected by cataract in Sri Lanka and it has become the foremost optometry related issue in our country. As such, the Government does not have enough resources to attend to all the patients, and the patients end up waitlisted for a cataract surgery which may not be compatible to their anguish. Considering same, the Lions Club 306 A1 has established Lions Eye Hospital in Pandura that caters to all optometric maladies including cataract,” added Fernando.

Over 5,000 attendees participated at the community service camp held at Sri Ghanessara temple, Sellakataragama, which was hosted by the Lions district 306 A1 with the assistance of many expert medical officers. The health checkups were granted free of charge for blood sugar, etc. and the attendees were provided medicine and required health advice. Pregnant mothers and elders were provided specialised care and assistance.

Parallel to this, personality development and vocational training programs were conducted by the Science Faculty of the University of Colombo, for school students and school leavers. One hundred participants who successfully completed the vocational training were awarded certificates. In addition, a captivating workshop on robotics was conducted for over 50 young adults.

Fernando further stated that through the personality development programs and vocational training programs conducted in Sella Kataragama and Beruwala, Lions Club International district 306 A1 was taking initiative to promote the upliftment of the local youth. He extended his gratitude towards all the sponsors and stakeholders for the successful conduction of the projects.
